The theme of faith was very popular in 1950’s Hollywood. So, finally, to bridge into where I think the Coens’ conception of faith in Hail, Caesar! These young influencers want to #MakeJesusViral. The films weren’t so much pieces of propaganda, but touchstones of the American image, products of a culture manufactured by Hollywood.
isn’t paying tribute to a lost art, it’s underlining the power of the cinema. Let me start by confronting the elephant in the room: yes, the title says to not trust reviews of the Coen Brothers’ movies and this is a review of one of their movies. Well, feel free to distrust it. So, yes, it is a comedy, and, yes, it is funny—with most of the jokes being at the expense of either communism or old actor and director personalities—but to go in expecting nothing but a riotous laugh-a-minute affair is to set yourself up for disappointment. Hail, Caesar! Certainly the Coens have dedicated their lives to that endeavor, and would care deeply about what motivates and justifies that decision. The American appeal is something that manifested every aspect of 1950s cinema, from biblical epics, to musicals and even old westerns. Some of the film’s best moments are when the simpleton megastar, Baird Whitlock (played by George Clooney), is seduced by the progressive sentiments of the communist ideology. #ElleWoods
The Coens (being Coens) come at it as a farce, with about 18 different things rumbling beneath the surface. In my personal opinion, the movie of theirs that was most affected by this disconnect between the total levity of the marketing and the deadpan satire of the film is Burn After Reading.
The question remains, why was it important for such an image to be upheld?
